A very short entry

im just so sick of thinking up titles for my posts. I don't need titles to guide me on how i should write my journals. Diaries don't really need headings if u ask me, Im not writing a cook book for pete's sake.

Drove to Plaza Singapura today. Met Kelvin, Zengkun, Weehou and his gf. Then we had dinner at burger king. Then we watched Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith. Then I drove Kelvin home. First time i drive to town area alone and back. I survived, Kelvin survived, and my Honda is still in one piece. Im very happy.

My Day's Journal

I've done a good deed today, and I am proud of myself.

I've managed to persuade a friend to quit from a certain evil MLM organisation which calls themselves the "DW" or "Dolphin Warriors", and aims to make money by selling "mircale-inducing" biomagnetic mattresses to the blissfully innocent and ignorant public. Considering that each of their products is priced between $2000 to $5000, and that salaries come purely from commissions, I would say that my friend has truely been enlightened and led away from the dark side. In my opinion, "Dolphin Warriors" is kinda a cheesey name for a company, especially for one which deals in nothing but miracle mattresses, though it might be understandable if they are the founder of the flavoured drink Pink Dolphin. The working environment is wierd ... though the company is big with a number of offices and departments spread acorss the Apex Towers, I cant help but ponder about the efficiency of a company which sees virtually no existence of computers. Perhaps there do exist a number of computers somewhere in the building which i did not visit, but it indeed is strange that one of these places is not the director's office, who supposedly is one of the most powerful man behind the show.

Well anyway, I've decided that I am a good samaritan. hah
*pats myself on the back*

Met Siyong, Grace and Pei Lin for dinner at Kenny Rogers down at Suntec. Had intended to go pubbing after dinner, but ended up waltzing the night away by the Singapore River. It has been so darn long since i took a casual walk down the bay, and I have forgotten how beautiful the place can get at night. It certainly brings back memories of the days when I'm still attached, haha ... for good times, and for bad times too. We waltzed all the way from Esplanade to Boat Quay and to Clarke Quay. Walked past Hooters for some visual relief, and our trail ended at the "Reverse Bungee" thingie, which Grace has gleefully called it. Its the catapult machine along the Singapore River, and we actually spent some time stoning there to admire the expressions of people who are going to be catapulted. Grace seemed darn enthu about getting on the ride, but she didn't coz it doesn't come cheap. She just kept yalping about how she wished to be launched into the air.

I think she's crazy.
And probably so does Siyong.

wahahahha
*snort*

It was a helluva night, really.
Ended off waiting for bus 174 with the girls at a bus stop which bus 174 doesn't stop by.

Recollections of my NS days

Once in a while, Id think back on the days when I've served my national service as an NSF. Most of my friends around dreaded their 2.5 years in green, that's probably coz they came from some siong units such as SIR or SAR. For me, it's a totally different and unique experience, and i actually kinda miss those days sometimes. If you haven't already know, i was a combat medic instructor back then, and my job is to train fresh Tekong recruits into medics before they are dispatched into their respective units. In my vocation, we dun do too much physical trainnings. And even if we do, it's never comparable to the stuffs others do in other combat units, such as commandoes. Our "trainning" sessions are almost completely limited to studying, from the books(which we call "formats") and lectures.

Every typical day, after the usual morning routine of area cleaning, reciting the medical pledge and singing the medical anthem, we'd gather in the trainning sheds and begin the lessons of the day. The things we cover include topics such as Spinal Injury Management, CPR, Treatment of Haemorrhages (blood loss), Burn Management ... you get the idea. Day in day out, Id bombard my trainees with medical knowledge to equip them with the necessary skills for future services in their units. The "highlight" of our camp, will be the infamous IntraVeneous Infusion sessions. To the unenlightened, that'd be "injection with drips" in the civilian layman language. Once per week, the trainees are required to practice their IV skills on their subjects, which is none other than their fellow trainees. The "casualties" will lie down on the floor, while the medics infuse them. The needle we use is slightly smaller the size of that used for blood donation, and normally we'd call them the "Yakult straws". Haha, those were the times. Its fun to see fresh trainees panicky over their first infusion, the expression on some of their faces when they see blood is quite unforgetable. Some of them actually broke down, one almost fainted ... and I had to carry him far away from the bloody (and i mean bloody) infusion site to relax him.

Perhaps the most enjoyable session to me, will be the TCS (Tok Cock Sessions) with my trainees... We'd talk about girls, life etc etc. Sometimes to be an instructor, you have to be a bit guai lan. It helps them to respect you a little more, especially for the Ah Beng trainees. I remember a fun conversation i had while teaching the nursing tray lesson...
it goes like...

Me : And so, you pour liquid A into this compartment, liquid B into the next compartment, and fill the last comparment with liquid C. Take care not to mix the liquids, very important.

Trainee: Sah-Gent! Sah-Gent! Why cannot mix the liquid ah? In the end still going to be applied to the same area what?

*I didn't know the answer myself actually ... so i tried to get away with it*

Me: *stared at trainee* Later lunch time, you go cookhouse, you can take your rice, your soup, your ice cream, your drink, and your watermelon. Then you mix, and then you eat. Ho Seh Boh?

That invited a roar of laughter from the floor, and most importantly, it silenced the trainee. Phew, haha. It's moments like these which make those days unforgetable eva! There was once also ...

*Spotted trainee dozing off during my lesson in training shed, hot weather*

Me: Oie!! Ah Tan, sleepy ah? Last nite steal chicken rite??

Trainee: Wah Lau! Sah-Gent! The fan is sucking my energy lah, cannot concentrate.

*that moron trying to be funny with me*

Me: Is it? So serious ah, then i better switch off the fan. *walked to control and turned off fan*

*Remaining lesson was conducted with no ventilation, and everyone sweated like a donkey, including myself*

Muahaha, *snort*, that was just so fun.

Medics Foreva,

Behold the Red Cross!!!

Untitled

I feel like updating my blog today.
Yes i really do

But somehow, I just cant think of anything interesting to blog on right now. Im feeling groggy, from the Heneiken i had while watching the 11pm Animes on Arts Central. Im probably gonna get a hangover tomorrow when i wake up ... ooooooooo sweet, haven't had one of those in a while. I think Im feeling hungry also ... there's ham downstairs, and more Heneikens in the fridge, but i just dun feel like leaving my cushioned chair at the moment. Heneikens are soooo much nicer than Tigers. Their smoother to the throat, and comes with a better aftertaste. I've got a friend who actually walks around carrying this huge round bag bearing no designs except the Heneiken logo. Im getting drowsier by the minute, but still not drowsy enough to overcome my laziness to walk to the bathroom for my pre-sleep personal hygiene. I am hungry. I want food. Or rather, i need someone to drag me to the kitchen for some chow. Alternatively, i can drive out of my estate to the 24hour kopitiam at Joo Seng for some fish ball noodles, but if i suay i may be caught by TP for drunk driving. Im not drunk though, just a little groggy from alcohol.

*looks around room*

I've got some food with me now actually. Stashed nicely in an accessible corner of my room is a bag of Australian chips, a pack of chocolate with macadamia nuts fillings, and some low-class biscuits which are probably Lao Hong already.

Ack whatever. Hey i updated my blog!
Weee.

Wedding Dinner Conversation

You guys know how Chinese wedding dinners frequently serves roast porks? Im talking about the dish which the pig's skin gets fried till it turns brown and crispy, and you eat it with sweet sauce or something like that. Well yeah ... I was discussing this tradition with my mom and ah mah during the wedding banquet i had a few days back, and I thought I might share what i learned. Its pretty interesting, really.

From what i heard, the pork dish is kinda a gift from the groom's family to the bride's family. It is only presented on the day after the marriage, after the couple consummated the night before. The roasted pig must be presented on a large plate together with the pig's head, usually in a layout that resembled the living pig itself (head in front and tail behind, sometimes with the 4 legs sticking out from the side). The pig's head is actually an indicator of whether the bride is a virgin before her wedding. On the wedding night, the bride is required to wear a white coloured panty, and you people know what happens after the sexual intercourse if she is indeed a virgin.
If she isn't, the pig's ears are sliced off when the dish is presented to the bride's household. Otherwise, the ears remain on the pig's head, and the dish is presented together with the stained panty ( I think ). In olden times where asian values are strong to the core of the Chinese traditions, losing your virginity before marriage is somewhat the equivalent of losing your purity, and the bride will likely be looked down by most people, including the groom's family. This is why relatives and friends all tend to flock around the dish when it is presented, to take a good look at its ears.

But well ... ... with the advancement in surgical technology and all, this custom gradually loses its meaning. Virgins can now be "recreated" as long as you got the dough to pay for it. Haha, anyways, if this custom is practiced in the US, the rubbish bin will probably be full of trashed ears.

Wedding Banquet!

I went for a wedding banquet today.

My cousin's getting married, and she's 26 years old.
Wow, for some reason the marriage age is getting younger all the time. My cousin is from Batam, and the groom's a local. From the presentation videos, the groom apparently made his proposal to my cuz while they were away in Korea for vacation. Its pretty romantic. From the pictures that flashed by, i'd guess the groom actually proposed while the couple is playing around in the snowfield. A few pictures captured the immediate scenes that followed after the proposal ... my cousin's astonished look and all. Many emotions were captured, and i wondered who actually took the pictures.

The familiar music started playing, and the restaurant attendants began to start their "smoking effect" with the dry ice and water chemistry thingie. The restaurant people had distributed some confetti launching tubes beforehand to the tables cloest to the aisle. Its something like those party poppers that we've all seen before, except bigger... much bigger. It's about a metre long, and you can imagine the amount of confetti compressed within a single tube. The end of the tube is fixed to a darn powerful launching system that cracks like an army thunderflash. As the couple walked down the aisle towards the stage, those armed with the weapons starting blasting their loads on the couple, skywards of coz ... gravity takes care of the rest. My table is located near the end of the aisle, so it took some time before the couple actually reach us.

AND ......

... this goon ... this bloody moron from the other side of the aisle parallel to where i was standing, unveiled four tubes of that WMD all of a sudden and directed it at a 45 degrees angle at the area over the carpet. I took Mechanical Physics last sem, and i knew something was going to go wrong. The couple walked past our area, the guy set off his load, and the darn confetti was tossed in a parabola OVER the couple and ONTO our table. He didn't seem to realise the consequences of his lousy aiming after that ... he's probably satisfied that he actually launched those thingamagics. My mom, my ah mah, myself and everyone else on our table was covered with colourful papers. Some of my relatives started to brush their hair with their hands to sweep of any landed conffettis, but all they did was push the shiny things further into their locks. i wasn't spared, and neither was our table ... along with all the utensils. I had a pink and green strip of crepe paper in my soy sauce, along with some shiny bits of plastic material, and the chilli sauce looked like some kid's art project. In fact ... i think i recall seeing more colourful things than the table itself.

that nincompoop ought to be sent back to the army for range retrainning

Then, the first course arrived. The waitress placed the dish onto our table, my another cousin sitting beside me commented.

"Hey, we had confettii for appetizer."

haha nice one ... anyways, they changed the utensils and all. Doesn't really matter to me anyway... I've eaten worse things in the army.
K la, dinner was great, but i had to missed some TV shows for it. We left at around 11pm, by the time we reached home, it was 11.45pm. At least i still manage to catch the remaining 15min of Shaman King.

hah!

By the way, the waitress was a chiobu!

Recollections

Hmm... some recollections of the events that i've came across during my mugging term.

This examination period marked the worst hits of insomia I've ever had. I dunt know if ya guys out there have been stuck by cases of insomia at night like me, especially when you've spent the day mugging heavily. The mind's pretty alive and full when you get to bed. Even while you are technically resting, you begin subconsciously recapping all the formulas and facts through your mind. Sometimes this is involuntary, and it simply drives you wide awake. Usually, id end up tumbling around my bed for hours. That is bad, especially if you are having a paper the very next day. And even if you dun, it simply drains you of energy for next day's tasks. I usually fall asleep eventually, but I ended up waking up earlier to compensate for all the lost time. By the time i begin my day, it's already 2pm, and that sucked, especially when you have tons of work waiting for you to tend to.

On the night before my first paper, (CS1101C Programming Methodololgy), i set a new record for the longest elapsed time between me going to bed and me falling asleep. A full 7 hours, and maybe longer. I went to bed around 1am, and i stayed awake till 8am in the morning. Even then, i only managed to fall asleep after my mum made me some hot milo. Its indeed a good thing that my Programming paper is late in the afternoon at 3pm+, else i wouldn't have been able to bear it. Other cases followed, but perhaps not as bad... usually i fell alseep before 7am.

Now that my exams have ended, i can merrily think back on the days past and laugh it through. Haha ... I usually go to bed around 3am on non-exam nights. Sometimes i fell asleep right away, while other times i began tumbling about the bed for hours trying to shut my mind. I've tried everything, watching TV, counting sheeps, moving somewhere else to sleep, and even doing push ups and sit ups. Anyway, they seemed to make me even more awake. Id look at the clock frequently to see how much time i had left to rest myself. The lesser it is, the more anxious i'd get, and the more awake id become. Come 5.30am, the birds outside began their morning chirping session, my neighbour's dog began barking away, and the sky started to brighten up. That made me even more anxious, and id be even more wide awake. Its a cumalative effect, haha. I felt sorry for my alarm clock, which i've frequently tossed about in frustration when i realised its only a few moments away from morning.

Anyway, i realised a warm glass of milk and some snacks really does help to introduce drowsiness into your mind.

Also, its interesting how the examination period reminded me of all the little pleasures in life. The mugging session is no doubt tough to everyone, and most of us probably dreaded it. But coz of it, I seem to view everything else away from the books and notes as a form of enjoyment. Normally, I dun watch much TV ... as i usually devote most of my free time to the internet. While i am studying, however, i gave myself short breaks to rest my mind, most of which i'd use to tune into the TV programs... as late as 2am at nite. I actually find it very entertaining, no matter wad program is on .... haha. I am also addicted to the 7pm show on Channel 8, think its called "Square Pegs" in English. There's a character in there whom bears the same name as my friend, silly old PeiJun. Wednesdays to Fridays, Central is showing animes from 11pm for a full hour, and damn are they good.

May sound silly to you eh? Even taking a shit in the toilet is pleasurable. The relief after discharging my load.... =)

K, its 4.50am now.... and im feeling tired. Time to turn in
Nitez.

Post-Exam Syndrome

The exam waves came and gone....

It's been long, way too long.
I've been mugging away for almost a month now.
Now's really the moment I've been craving for a while, which marks the beginning of my 3 months holiday. This period is almost as long as a semester itself. There's every reason for me to be celebrating, to jump-start my new found freedom.

But yet ... i seem to feel a strange sense of emptiness after the ending of my ordeals. Having relinquished my tasks of facing the books everyday, i felt rather lost, not knowing what to do. Its funny, but the rewards don't always seem to taste as sweet as you have imagined while you are waiting for it. Hmm.... maybe I'm just not used to the sudden switch in my lifestyle, especially now that i have so much free time on my hands.

After i hit home, i headed straight to my study room, where i have cacooned myself for a month. There i kept a study scheduale to help me keep track of my daily study tasks, with a calendar-like style to plan my days. A column is cancelled out at the close of each day. Today, i made the final stroke onto the list, and concluded all my dealings with the present semester and to all the modules i have taken. My year as a freshman in NUS has officially came to an end.

Wee, way to go. Im a senior!
... oh wadever...

I hibernated for 4 hours in my room, and spent the rest of my day loafing around the house.
Tomorrow I'll be paying my last respects to Dr.Wee at the Istana with Vignesh, then maybe we'll go catch a movie.

Hopefully my post exam syndrome will end.

Hah, cheerio.
